“WILL WORK FOR STUDENTS!”

Teaching shapes everything I do. From working with educators to working with students, developing the conditions in which learning can thrive is my top priority.

I developed the Certificate in Antiracist Writing Pedagogy Program in partnership with the Dimensions of Culture Writing Program and the Teaching + Learning Commons at the University of California, San Diego. Through reading groups, teaching circles, and guided self-reflection, this year-long certification program supports first-year writing instructors in developing a teaching philosophy and toolbox of practical methods for actively resisting all forms of racism.

Writing for Social Justice

Read about the Writing for Social Justice Symposium I developed with my first-year writing students at the University of Delaware in Fall 2017. The Symposium culminated in a book of student essays on changing campus climate.

Student Testimonies

“For the first time I have done writing that I care about.”

“Professor Emily made us squeeze our brains to think critically, to go beyond the frame.”

“I genuinely look forward to going to Professor Emily’s class every day. I can actually say I am proud of the pieces I write in her class. Her assignments not only make me a better writer, but they also challenge me to open myself up to different outlooks and perspectives of the world.”

“Throughout my life, I viewed writing as a tool to my development as a student, but being in Professor Emily’s class this semester, I took away countless lessons as to how my writing can become something much more important. Each student was able to write about what made them most inspired, allowing for a dynamic experience. I would have to say that I’ve learned more about myself and my peers in a semester of writing than I had ever imagined.”
